Film society launches with couch surfing documentary

BIRMINGHAM-based documentary film society, ‘What the Doc!’, is set to launch with a screening of its first feature – ‘One Couch at a Time’. The feature is billed as the world’s first full length biography about couch surfing – a movement which sees people opt to stay on the sofas of friends and strangers rather than hotels.

Created by Luana Botas, team member at Birmingham meeting and events venue thestudio, What the Doc! aims to promote documentary films as an alternative to main stream cinema, and will be showcasing a series of monthly events.

Ms Botas said: “I created What the Doc! as part of a dissertation project for my MA in events and exhibition management and I’ve now found that it acts as a great outlet for promoting documentary film making in the West Midlands.

Sponsored by thestudio, the first event will be held at The Spotted Dog pub in Digbeth at 6pm on Wednesday September 4.

Emma Jennings, managing director at thestudio in Cannon Street, said: “Luana is an asset to our team and we’re delighted support her project. Developing her knowledge and skill set can only be beneficial to us and her creative thinking is always welcomed.”
