Martineau Galleries project wakes from its slumber – reports

THE long-mooted redevelopment of the Martineau Galleries site in central Birmingham could be back on, reports suggest.

Local newspaper reports suggest the scheme – broadly bordered by Corporation Street, Bull Street and Dale End – is up for sale.

The redevelopment of the area – which includes the Oasis Market and the outdoor market The Square – is part of the HS2 Curzon Masterplan and connects the city centre shopping area to Eastside.

The site has approval for a mixed use development but the plans have been on hold for so long that planning permission for the scheme is set to lapse.

But it is understood owner Martineau Galleries Partnership – made up of Bullring co-owner Hammerson, Land Securities and Phoenix Group Holdings – plan to sell the site and has instructed Knight Frank to advise.

The scheme represents 915,000 sq ft of retail space, 270,000 sq ft of office space, a 320,000 sq ft hotel or 850 residential units, 215,000 sq ft of leisure space and 54,000 sq ft of cultural space.
