Severn Trent staff flood into new headquarters

STAFF have been taking their seats at the new £60m headquarters of water company Severn Trent this week following a two-year building programme.

The 170,000 sq ft building opened its doors in Coventry to welcome in workers from its offices across Birmingham and the West Midlands as the slow process of integrating all the company’s centres begins.

It is expected that all the 1,700 staff will have completed the move sometime next year to the seven-storey complex on the former car park site in St John’s Street.

The building has been built by BAM Construction with financial help to the tune of £6.5m from Advantage West Midlands and support from Coventry City Council.

Birmingham-based developer Stoford is working with Associated Architects, Webb Gray Architects and engineering services consultants ESC on the sustainable design.

Environmental features include thermal adaptive cooling, photovoltaic and solar panels, biomass boilers and rainwater harvesting, ensuring it has received an ‘excellent’ BREEAM rating.

Orientation tours were laid on for staff relocating to the new operations centre earlier this month, giving them a chance to see what life in the new building is going to be like.

Severn Trent HR manager Oliver West said: “We had really positive feedback from people and there’s a real sense of anticipation about moving into our new home.”

A company spokeswoman said there had been no redundancies as a result of the consolidation of offices with some staff taking the opportunity to leave the business.

An official launch event is being held at the end of October.
