Rolls-Royce powers FTSE to early gains

MORNING REPORT: Headline shares recorded strong gains in early deals this morning, with aero-engine maker Rolls-Royce setting the pace and mining heavyweights and oil producers providing firm support.

At 8:30am, the FTSE100 was up 34.39 points at 5,612.83 with the FTSE250 ahead 42.3 points at 10,594.7 and the FTSE Smallcaps slightly lower at 2,968.2.

LONDON MARKETS

Investor nerves over sovereign debt were settled when the EU said Ireland will not need emergency funding. The news helped London equity markets get off to a strong start.

Aero engine maker Rolls-Royce was the early pace-setter, up 22.5p at 614p after an upgrade to overweight from equal weight at Morgan Stanley.
