Veteran lawyer set to step down after 50 years

A LONG-SERVING Warwickshire lawyer is set to retire from practice after 50 years in the profession.

Stratford-upon-Avon-based Julian Rawstorne worked for Rawstorne Heran Solicitors, now part of West Bromwich firm Clark Brookes Turner Cary which trades as CBTC Rawstorne Solicitors.

Mr Rawstorne went into the law in 1965 after graduating from Keble College, Oxford, and Guildford Law School. He then gained experience with London firms, learning criminal law in the bear pit of Lavender Hill Magistrates Court.

In 1975 he moved to Stratford to the then FB Hancock, now part of Lodders. There he specialised in civil litigation for 20 years, representing victims of domestic violence, a sector now handled by the police via restraining orders.

He went into practice on his own account in 1997 and gradually built up his own business. In 2008 he was joined by joint partner Daljit Heran and the firm expanded its premises in Windsor Street to 10 rooms.

At one point 50% of the turnover was family law, with crime and mental health the other two major business sectors – the firm holds Legal Aid franchises for family and mental health.

Mr Rawstorne said: “I have always enjoyed helping others and listening to people. My motto has been to provide a personal and caring service. By and large if you listen to people you will do OK.

“I still enjoy the law – it makes you realise what is going on in the world. It has given me a fascinating career.”

He will remain with the firm for two days a week to ensure a smooth handover.
