Birmingham tech firm concludes partnership with social care organisation

A BIRMINGHAM-based technology firm specialising in the health sector has entered a long-term national partnership with health and social care organisation Turning Point.

Breaking Free Group, based at Innovation Birmingham campus, is the creator of a pioneering digital healthcare platform targeting addictive behaviours.

Turning Point, a national health and social care enterprise, set up in 1964, offers specialist and integrated service in over 200 locations across England, focusing on substance misuse, learning disability, mental health and employment.

Breaking Free Group’s product for specialist drug and alcohol services, Breaking Free Online is an evidence-based online treatment and recovery programme for substance dependence. It harnesses the latest digital technology to make effective interventions more powerful, engaging and accessible than ever before.

Using Breaking Free Online means Turning Point will be able to offer all its service users 24/7 access to confidential treatment and recovery support via the internet every day of the year.

Since the programme directly targets 39 substances – including novel psychoactive substances (legal highs), substitute medications and prescribed medications of abuse – it will also strengthen Turning Point’s ability to engage and treat the growing number of people who are misusing these types of drugs.

Glyn Davies, Service Development Director at Breaking Free, said: “We are delighted that Turning Point has embraced technology-enhanced recovery in such a comprehensive way. Our new national partnership gives service users working alongside Turning Point continuous access to evidence-based interventions.  We look forward to demonstrating its impact through our ongoing joint programme of research and evaluation.”

Jay Stewart, Turning Point’s Director of Operations for Substance Misuse, the organisation was pleased to be involved in the new partnership.

“At Turning Point we are known for our innovation and passion for delivering best solutions for service users, staff and those who commission our services.  Adopting Breaking Free’s proven evidence-based programmes will only strengthen our reach and impact further, as part of the range of support we offer to the people and communities we work with,” he said.

Breaking Free Group, which also has an office in Deansgate, Manchester, is a portfolio company of Midven, the Midlands-based provider of venture capital funding to early-stage and established businesses.
