Birmingham conferencing centre set to be replaced by new care village

A BIRMINGHAM conferencing facility is set to be demolished and replaced by a multi-million pound care village under detailed plans set for approval by the city council.

Edgbaston Care Home Ltd, together with BSL Strategic Ltd have submitted plans to replace the old Clarandon Suites in Edgbaston with the new care facility.

The plans, set for approval at the city’s planning committee on Thursday (May 12), propose a 60-bed care home, 19 assisted living units and 99 care apartments, together with a mix of communal facilities, car parking, landscaping and engineering works.

The care home is planned as an L-shaped building of four to five storeys and would be situated adjacent to Hagley Road and part of Clarendon Road. The care home will provide care to patients in individual rooms, each of which will have en-suite facilities.

The ground floor of the care home would include communal facilities including restaurant, cinema, library, IT suite, gym, consulting/treatment rooms, hairdressers and cafe.

The 19 Assisted Living apartments (ALA) will consist of 15 one-bed units and four two-bed units. The, which will be connected to the care home, will offer a lower level of care than that provided in the more focussed care home.

The 99 care apartments would comprise: 17 one bed, 81 two beds and one three bed units. The two bed units would be on average 64sqm (with bedrooms 8.3sqm and 14.3sqm). The one bed units would be on average 54sqm (with bedroom of 12.7sqm). This facility would provide the lowest level of care and the most independent form of living in the care village.

Residents from the ALA and care apartments would also have access to the communal facilities.

The application seeks the demolition of Clarandon Suites, which were formerly the Warwickshire Masonic Temple and Edgbaston Assembly Rooms. Demolition consent was gained under a previous planning approval.

The existing functions facility comprises a large four storey hall and conference facility set within landscaped grounds and car parking. The site has 180 marked parking spaces arranged in small pockets to the south and west of the building with a large main car park located to the north.
