Construction group wins £10m leisure centre contract

BROMSGROVE’s new leisure centre will be built by Morgan Sindall after it was chosen for the £10.3m development.
The centre will have two swimming pools, fitness suite, cycling studio and a climbing wall. It will replace the Dolphin Centre, on the adjacent site, which will be demolished and turned into a car park once the new centre is open.
Cllr Peter Whittaker, who is responsible for leisure services at Bromsgrove District Council, said: “After years of consultation, preparation, and planning, we are excited to now move forward and provide our community with a new generation of exciting leisure opportunities.”

The Dolphin Centre which runs at a “heavy annual loss” but the new centre is designed to be self-funding and an operator will be selected to run it.

The leisure centre development has been managed by a town centre regeneration partnership of public bodies that was formed in 2010 to redevelop areas of the town. The partnership has already led on significant changes on Bromsgrove’s the high street and major retail developments coming forward across the town.
Work is scheduled to begin this month with the centre expected to be open by the end of next year.
