Surprise for Solihull businessman at annual awards

A SOLIHULL businessman received a welcome surprise when he went to present a prize at an annual awards ceremony.

Rod Embley, of Embley Business Units, took to the stage at the Solihull Chamber of Commerce Employee of the Year Awards only to be given the Business Person of the Year gong.

Mr Embley received his award from the chamber’s director Jane Jackson.

She said: “Mr Embley is a real inspiration, recently celebrating his 70th birthday, yet still a keen racquet ball player.

“As a firm believer in giving something back to the community, he started the Olton in Bloom project.

“His business tenants quote him as being flexible and accommodating.”

Among the speakers at the awards was Solihull Chamber president Paul Thandi, chief executive of the NEC Group, and Kate Hall of Arup and Partners.

The ceremony was held at the Village Hotel in Shirley. Other winners were:

Caroline Kelley, conference and events guest relations manager, Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel

Professional Development Award
Charles Wheatcroft, costs draftsman, Sydney Mitchell Solicitors.

Career Advancement Award
Kevin Green, reception manager, Hilton Birmingham Metropole.

Outstanding Employee Award
Richard Lockstone, leisure club manager, Village Hotel
