Teaching a viable second career option for finance sector staff

FINANCIAL sector workers concerned about their jobs or looking for work are being invited to think about teaching.
A special session, which is being hosted by Leeds Trinity & All Saints, will promote the new career direction with a particular focus on re-training as a maths teacher.
Candidates could even find themselves earning up to £9,000 while training.
The Train to Teach Mathematics event will take place on April 22 from 1pm to 5pm at Club LS1, 3 Albion Place, Leeds.
There will be experts in teacher training and finance as well as current maths teachers available to answer queries.
According to organiser Andy Gilliland, associate principal lecturer in education at Leeds Trinity, the fact that Leeds is the UK’s biggest financial centre outside of London was an influential factor in deciding to host the event.
He said there was also a national shortage of maths teachers.
“We decided to host this event in the city centre to make it easier for people working in finance and related industries to attend,” Mr Gilliand said.
“Anyone can just drop in on the day and we will have experts on hand- including working maths teachers- to answer queries about the job itself, courses and finance.”
He added: “There are lots of routes in for those considering a career change to teach maths in high schools and you don’t need to be a maths graduate. It’s an inspiring and rewarding career.”
For people interested in career development but not necessarily in maths, Leeds Trinity is also holding a postgraduate open evening at its Horsforth campus on Brownberrie Lane that same evening between 5.30 and 7.30 pm.
