Future options explored for long-derelict theatre building

A team of consultants has been hired to conduct a feasibility study into potential future uses for the Grand Theatre, in Doncaster.

The Theatre, in Trafford Way, was built in 1899 and operated as such until 1963, when it became a bingo hall operated by Mecca Bingo.

It eventually closed in 1995 and has been derelict ever since.

A spokesman for Doncaster Council said: “It occupies a prominent position opposite Doncaster Interchange, and has the potential to play an important role in the economic and cultural development of the town centre.

“The theatre is an important heritage asset, and is likely to seat over 1,000, with an alternative provision for standing room in the stalls – as an alternative option to seating – allowing the theatre to accommodate up to 1,500.

“We are inviting as many people and organisations as possible to give us their views on a number of issues connected with how the theatre might be used.”

The feasibility study has been made possible through a grant from the Theatres Trust. theatresearch theatre consultants have been appointed by The Grand Theatre Doncaster Stakeholder Group, which comprises Doncaster Council, Frenchgate Ltd Partnership, Friends of Doncaster Grand Theatre and the Theatres’ Trust.
