Building Briefs: Quarry work granted, Harrogate hotel sold, and more

A PLANNING application to allow quarrying half a mile away from a scheduled ancient monument has been approved.

Tarmac applied for an extension of its existing Nosterfield Quarry near Bedale in North Yorkshire which has been approved by North Yorkshire County Council Planning Committee.

Nosterfield Quarry supplies around 1.1m tonnes of building materials a year into Leeds, York, Bradford, and North Yorkshire construction sites.

The application was opposed by objectors, who say that quarrying should not be permitted in the vicinity of the Thornborough Henges scheduled ancient monument, which dates from the Neolithic age.

The University of Cumbria has appointed Sheffield-based Bond Bryan Architects to develop the strategic masterplanning for its proposed campuses across Cumbria and North Lancashire.

The plans will see the university develop its estate across Cumbria and North Lancashire – the centrepiece of which will be a £70m campus in Carlisle.

Property consultants GVA Grimley in Leeds will be working alongside Bond Bryan Architects to provide planning support on the proposals and assist with the submission of planning applications.

The university was formed last August following the merger of St. Martin’s College, Cumbria Institute of the Arts, and the Cumbrian campuses of the University of Central Lancashire. The redevelopment of the university aims to cement its identity as a single organisation and major learning institution.
