YORK-based Native Architects is in the process of using an innovative insulation system made from hemp and lime for a project in North Yorkshire.

Native, a pioneer of environmental construction methods, is collaborating with The Limecrete Company of Norfolk to design an internal shuttering system for a barn conversion project at the grade II listed Hornington Manor at Bolton Percy in North Yorkshire.

The project, being delivered on behalf of Harrison Spinks, who supply luxury beds and farm hemp on site at Hornington for use in the manufacture of the mattresses, will involve the minimisation of waste within the manufacturing process with the unwanted hemp being used to insulate existing barns onsite.

James Newton, architectural technologist at Native, said: “We plan to use the waste hemp ‘shiv’, the woody core of the hemp plant, as an insulative within a lime and cementious mix which will then be poured into a mould that is anchored back to the farm’s original masonry.

“Using Hempcrete in construction is widely considered to be “carbon negative”, in that it absorbs CO2 as it sets. Therefore using waste shiv produced on site further enhances its inherent environmental credentials.”
