Bar code technology to be pioneered at conference

DELEGATES at Kirklees Business Conference (KBC) will be the first to trial an innovative new exhibition badging system as developed by Halifax-based AIDC European Centre of Excellence.
The sophisticated new 2D barcode system will allow the hundreds of delegates expected at the event to access seminars with the minimum of inconvenience.
KBC 09, which is being held at the Galpharm Stadium on September 29, is one of the biggest business events of its kind to be held in the region in recent years.
Guest speaker this year is ‘Secret Millionaire’ Carl Hopkins.
Organisers said they needed to find some way of effortlessly pre-registering visitors and allowing them entry to the exhibition and the various seminars on offer during the day.
Event director Danny Mathary said: “Entry to the KBC for delegates is free and has different people have booked for different seminars we had to identify a process to determine what each individual delegate has booked on the day.
“We particularly wanted to avoid the waste and hassle of sending out paper tickets for each separate seminar to only then have to issue name badges on the day also. This AIDC technology stores everything in a credit card sized name badge and it is a real coup for us to be the first conference to utilise this.”
The AIDC Centre is one of the world leaders in the technologies of Automatic Identification and Data Capture. This includes technologies such as 1D barcodes, 2D codes, radio frequency identification and biometrics.
AIDC expert Prof Keith Osman, who developed the system, said: “We are using 2D codes on the delegate badges. Many people may have seen them on everyday things like gas bills or tax forms – they look a bit like tiny crossword puzzles but they can hold significant amounts of data.”
“When a delegate registers for the event we will take the information they give us, including any seminars for which they may have registered. We convert that information into a 2D code which we will print on the delegate’s name badge.”
