Yorkshire is UK’s “fish and chip capital”

Yorkshire has more chippies compared to any other county in the UK.

The National Federation of Fish Friers has declared Yorkshire the “fish and chip capital” of the UK, with more than 1,700 chippies.

According to their extensive research, more than one fifth of Yorkshire people visit fish and chip shops every week, with 56% buying fish and chips to eat in the home as a family meal.

Fryers from the Magpie Café in Whitby, North Beach Fish and Chips in Bridlington, and the Wetherby Whaler brought the tradition of fish suppers at the seaside to the world-famous Chelsea flower show last week on the Welcome to Yorkshire garden.

Barry Camfield from North Beach Fish and Chips in Bridlington said: “We already know Yorkshire fish and chips are the best, so it’s no surprise that the whole county loves them as much as we do”

Caroline Murphy, Director at Wetherby Whaler, said: “Yorkshire has a fine tradition of serving the best seafood in Britain and our fish and chips in particular are world-famous – and with good reason!”

Ian Robson, owner of The Magpie Café, Whitby, said:“The Magpie is honoured to be championing Yorkshire fish and chips and we hope to be back serving them very soon.”

Sir Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire said:“Yorkshire fish and chips are the best in the world, and we were delighted to showcase them on the beach at our spectacular garden at Chelsea last week. There’s no better way to round off the half term break than a trip out for traditional Fish and Chips.”
