Derelict former Leeds hospital site set for 500-home redevelopment

Work to deliver more than 500 homes and 100 jobs at the former Seacroft Hospital site in Leeds is underway.

The major mixed tenure development is being delivered by Keepmoat Homes and Strata in partnership with HCA (Homes and Communities Agency) which saw the companies gather on site this week to mark the ground-breaking ceremony which will kick-start a revolutionary six-year project.

As well as 503 properties in a variety of two, three, four and five-bedroom designs, the development aims to deliver benefits for the wider community, including job creation and training opportunities.

A Skills Hub in partnership with Leeds College of Building aims to maximise the use of local labour and skills development.

The Grade II listed clock tower still stands prominent and will be incorporated within the scheme, with plans for refurbishment and use as a proposed community resource.

Ian Hoad, regional managing Director for Keepmoat Homes Yorkshire West division of Keepmoat Homes, said: “The people of Leeds have been hearing about the fantastic regeneration plans for Seacroft for some time, so it’s great to finally be on site and getting the wheels in motion for them.  This marks the first of many milestones in Seacroft and our wider community pledges will hopefully go a long way to making this a great area to live and work, for existing and new residents.”

Andrew Weaver, chief executive of Strata, said: “We are really pleased to see the first phase of the build commence at Kudos, our flagship development at Seacroft Hospital. The sod-cutting ceremony is an important milestone, a celebration to officially mark the start of work on site.

“Kudos is a landmark scheme for East Leeds, offering much-needed homes in the region; we look forward to seeing the development take shape and delivering our collection of high quality new homes.”

Rob Pearson, general manager at the Homes and Communities Agency said: “This start on site by Keepmoat Homes provides a range of quality homes on land that has been unused for some time, and shows how vital our work is to get full use of surplus public land to benefit local communities.”

A show home is expected to be unveiled at the development around November with the first movers anticipated in January 2018.
