More details on planned 205-bed hotel presented to the public

Hammerson, the owner and developer of Victoria, Leeds, said it has received an overwhelmingly positive public response to its plans for a new hotel.

The 205-bed hotel, next to Victoria Gate in Leeds, will create around 50 jobs when complete. It should feature a 14-storey building and help regenerate a 1,670 sq m site adjacent to Victoria Gate, which is currently being used as a temporary car park.

It would also include an on-site gym and conferencing facilities as well as a bar and restaurant on the ground floor.

Over 120 people attended a public exhibition to view plans for the hotel. Among those present were residents, retailers, city stakeholders and local businesses. Hammerson said 90% of the feedback on the day was in support of the plans, with 86% backing the overall design of the proposals.

Robin Dobson, UK Director of Development and Project Management at the company, said: “We are very grateful to residents, businesses and councillors for the valuable feedback they’ve given us in recent weeks.

“Hammerson has a strong track record of investment in Leeds City Centre including the delivery of Victoria Gate which has played an important part in the city’s growth since it opened in 2016.

“These plans for a new, contemporary hotel represent the next step in our wider regeneration plans for the east of Leeds City Centre, creating a mixed-use destination for people to enjoy. We are now looking at all the comments before we submit our planning application to Leeds City Council this autumn.”

Martin Hamilton, Director of Leeds Civic Trust added: “Leeds Civic Trust is pleased to lend its support to these proposals for the Victoria Hotel, which has the potential to deliver a unique building at a key location in the city centre.

“After conversations with the Hammerson project team, we believe the scheme’s height, design and materials complement the existing parts of Victoria Gate and that the hotel will be a welcome addition to city centre.”

The Victoria Gate Hotel is one of the first schemes Hammerson is bringing forward as part of its City Quarters concept launched last year.

City Quarters is intended to create vibrant mixed-use neighbourhoods surrounding Hammerson’s existing flagship destinations, in thriving locations in the UK. This will see Hammerson transform many of its city venues beyond pure retail into successful neighbourhoods providing homes, work space, hotel space and public realm.
