Drivers in South Yorkshire will benefit from smoother and safer journeys as work gets underway to resurface a landmark Sheffield structure.

The road surface on the upper deck of Tinsley Viaduct will be replaced as part of a £7.5m investment in the area over the next 12 months.

This investment includes essential bridge work which took place at River Rother and Long Lane and the ongoing work on Tinsley Viaduct lower deck access road (A621T) which is expected to be completed in November.

Highways England Project Manager, Andy Barlow, said: “We’re replacing 40,650 squares metres of road surface in this area as part of a major investment. This includes resurfacing the upper deck of Tinsley Viaduct and resurfacing between M1 junction 36 and Westwood roundabout.

“We’ve already resurfaced a number of slip roads on the M1 at junction 34 and 35a. All of the work is being carried out overnight and will provide drivers with smoother and safer journeys.”

Work will start on Tinsley Viaduct on Monday 30 September and is expected to be completed by the end of October. It will be carried out between 8pm and 6am, Monday to Friday, and traffic will be diverted onto the lower deck of the viaduct.

Resurfacing between M1 junction 36 and Westwood is ongoing and is expected to be complete in October.

In addition to the resurfacing, from mid-October for around a month Highways England will be replacing 44 motorway lights and 34 sign lights with modern efficient LED lighting.

The new lighting is 53% more efficient, saving the equivalent energy of powering the homes of 20,000 people. They can be remotely controlled and require minimum maintenance which means less disruption for drivers.
