Hotel in the heart of the city set for approval

Plans for a flagship hotel in the heart of Leeds received a boost as council planners recommended the scheme for approval.

The plans will see the site, which is currently a temporary surface car park, redeveloped to provide a new flagship hotel. The hotel, which is being developed by Hammerson, will enhance the offer at its Victoria Gate retail and leisure destination and the Leeds cultural quarter, driving additional footfall and spend to the city.

The Victoria Gate Hotel is one of the first schemes Hammerson is bringing forward as part of its City Quarters concept.

City Quarters will create vibrant mixed-use neighbourhoods surrounding Hammerson’s existing flagship destinations in thriving locations in the UK. This will see Hammerson transform many of its city venues beyond pure retail into successful neighbourhoods providing homes, workspace, hotel space and public realm.

Robin Dobson, UK director of development and project management at Hammerson, said: “These plans for a new, contemporary hotel represent the next step in our wider regeneration plans for the east of Leeds City Centre.

“Over the last few months we have spoken to hundreds of local people about our plans and have been encouraged by the positive response. People see this new hotel bringing real benefits to the area.”

Hammerson says it has listened carefully to public and council comments and has made improvements to the scheme, including creating more landscaping and a recessed digital advertising screen.

Two planning applications relating to the Victoria Gate Hotel are to be considered by councillors at the Leeds Council City Plans Panel meeting at 1.30pm on 30 January.
