My Yorkshire: Julian Gratton, of Outside the Box, Leeds

Julian Gratton is joint managing partner of marketing agency, Outside the Box, in Leeds.

Where do you live/where are you from?

I’m originally from Little Horton in Bradford but I now live in Roe Green in Manchester. It’s a reasonable commute but let’s hope that improves within my lifetime.

What is your favourite place to visit in Yorkshire and why?

The Cow & Calf in Ilkley. I have lots of fond memories there of school trips and days out as a youngster climbing up the rocks and walking the hills.  Even without the memories, whatever the weather it’s remains one of my favourite destinations today.

What is still on your “to do” list in the region?

Shamefully I have never been to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and it’s something I need to change soon.

What is the most memorable meal you’ve ever had in Yorkshire?

I loved the Sushi at Issho in Leeds City Centre – it’s a food and restaurant that seems to fit with the vibrancy of Leeds and it’s a good opportunity enjoy the skyline from the outdoor terrace.

What is your most Yorkshire trait?

I pronounce words ending in an ‘o’ in a very Yorkshire way that reveals my Yorkshire roots.  It’s been picked up a number of times across the Pennines – something I’m rather proud of.

Favourite piece of trivia about the region.

Yorkshire has the most Michelin starred restaurants than any other region in the UK outside of London. Always worth a mention to any London friends who might need reminding.

What is your favourite cultural icon to come out of Yorkshire?

David Hockney – what he has done for the world of art and the dreams he has inspired in lots of Yorkshire creative people has been amazing.  He still manages to retain that Yorkshire dryness despite living the majority of his life outside of Yorkshire and no doubt surrounded by sycophants – he is a true Yorkshire icon in so many ways.

Worst experience or thing about Yorkshire?

Being at the Bradford City Fire when I was 11.

What is one thing you’d steal from Lancashire (or other UK regions) if you could?

Dishoom curry house…one has to open in Yorkshire soon! It quite possibly is the best curry I’ve ever had. Sorry Mumtaz.

What is the most overrated thing about Yorkshire?

Leeds United, but I would say that being a Bradford fan.
