Detailed plans revealed for 154 bed city hotel

Detailed proposals have been unveiled for the next phase of the Heart of the City II scheme, which would see Sheffield welcome hotelier Radisson Blu to a prominent location on Pinstone Street.

The new hotel, designed by Sheffield-based architects HLM, would be housed in the 19th century Palatine Chambers and adjoining City Mews buildings on Pinstone Street, as well as a new connecting building on the site of Barkers Pool House on Burgess Street.

It would comprise 154 bedrooms, conferencing facilities and a rooftop bar and restaurant — providing views looking out to the Peace Gardens and Winter Gardens.

The ground floor will also feature complementary retail and food and beverage units.

“We understand the special qualities of this prominent site and the place it has in the hearts of Sheffield people.

“Our ambition is to breathe fresh life into this area with a building that is characterful, celebrating the quirky and romantic undercurrent of the city, respecting the surrounding richness of architectural heritage, and making a place that is still uniquely Sheffield.”

The unveiling of the hotel proposals coincides with news that bar and restaurant operator, The New World Trading Company (NWTC), has signed up to the scheme.

NWTC, known for its individual interiors and handcrafted cocktails, will open its new venue within a purpose-built food and beverage unit within Charter Square.

Andrew Davison, project director at Queensberry, said: “There is a real ambition to only introduce brands of standout quality to Heart of the City II and we are very pleased with the leasing results to date.

“Adding two more established brands in Radisson Blu and NWTC is a real coup and great news for the city centre.

“We will also soon be inviting interest from potential occupiers for the Block H site.

“There will be various food and beverage, leisure and cultural opportunities available across the Cambridge Street Collective, Bethel Chapel and Leah’s Yard developments.”

Councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council, added: “We’re excited to be making not just one, but two announcements relating to the Heart of the City II scheme this week, as our city centre reopens and we look ahead to projects that will play a massive part in supporting our local economy and businesses to rebuild and thrive.

“Firstly, our plans to introduce a brand-new hotel of exceptional quality on Pinstone Street are now ready to be viewed by the public.

“Radisson Blu is well-known for its style and provision of excellent customer service and will bring international recognition to the city.

“Secondly, the news that The New World Trading Company will be opening a venue in Charter Square is very welcome.

“NWTC are one of the most celebrated bar operators in the UK and we are delighted to add them to the mix.

“Sheffield has become a hub of investment in recent years with both global companies such as McLaren Automotive, Boeing and CMS basing themselves in the region, alongside many smaller, independent businesses that form a core part of Sheffield’s distinctive identity.

“As the Outdoor City we have a unique offer for investors and the regeneration of our city centre will reinforce Sheffield’s reputation as a vibrant, exciting setting for people to live and work.”

A public consultation on the hotel has been launched, with locals and neighbouring businesses invited to provide feedback before 21 July.

Subject to planning, construction is due to start later this year with the opening of the hotel targeted for 2023.
