Food app with a conscience in a bid to support region’s circular economy

Too Good To Go, the food app with a conscience, has today announced that it has joined Circular Yorkshire Month as an official partner.

Circular Yorkshire Month, which will run this November, aims to bring together partners from across the county to accelerate the region’s transformation towards a circular economy. Too Good To Go already has a strong presence in the region, with 300 food businesses from Yorkshire and The Humber already live on the app and to date with users they have saved more than 115,000 meals from going to waste.

As an official partner, Too Good To Go will be presented to all food businesses in the region as a key solution to reducing food waste and associated waste costs. Co-founder, Jamie Crummie will also be a guest speaker at the annual York & North Yorkshire LEP Conference on 6 November 2020 to talk about the steps food businesses can take towards a greener future.

Too Good To Go was designed to helps people rescue surplus food from restaurants, retailers and producers to stop it from going to waste. Users download the free app and search for nearby businesses with unsold food, they then purchase a ‘Magic Bag’ of food, collect it at an allotted time and enjoy it.

In honour of Circular Yorkshire and the new partnership, Too Good to Go has also teamed up with the York & North Yorkshire Growth Hub to waive the app’s annual administration fee for a year for 50 businesses who join the platform.

Paul Potts, Malton local and owner of Food 2 Remember which is working with Too Good To Go, said: “We really loved how simple the concept was. It’s a win-win-win – people get a great deal, it helps the environment, and my store avoids sending edible food to landfill. There are three main benefits of partnering with Too Good To Go. It brings new customers; people who come in for a Magic Bag return as full price customers, it allows me to waste less as a business and my food is actually being eaten and enjoyed by people rather than rotting in a bin!”

On joining Circular Yorkshire Month, Jamie Crummie, co-founder of Too Good To Go, said: “We’re proud to be joining Circular Yorkshire Month and playing a vital role in the region’s vision towards a circular economy. Our experience partnering with businesses in the region has shown the real appetite for sustainable business and we’re looking forward to seeing Yorkshire pave the way for other regions looking to improve their circular economy credentials.”

Katie Thomas, senior strategy manager for Low Carbon and Circular Economy at the York & North Yorkshire LEP said: “It’s great that Too Good to Go have joined our Circular Yorkshire campaign. Given food and hospitality are such key sectors in our region, we recognise that waste from food is a big issue to tackle. Partnering with Too Good To Go, we can take a positive step to address this”.
