Plans submitted for discount supermarket

Lidl GB has applied to Harrogate Borough Council to build a new supermarket.

The multi-million pound investment will redevelop the site of the former Lookers car dealership on Knaresborough Road.

If approved, Lidl’s proposals will create around 40 new full and part-time jobs for the local economy.

The new store would have a 13,600 sq ft sales area, an in-store bakery, customer toilets and 94 car parking spaces including disabled, parent & child spaces and rapid electric vehicle charging points.

Lidl’s property director for the North of England, Robert Beaumont, said: “We would like to thank everyone who took part in our virtual consultation and we are delighted with the encouraging response that we received from the community.

“Following this extremely positive feedback, we have now submitted a planning application for the site to Harrogate Borough Council.

“We have been looking forward to bringing a new store to Harrogate for a while and we hope the council agrees this is a great location for a new supermarket to serve the local community.

“We are extremely excited about the prospect of opening our first Lidl in the area and serving our fresh, quality and incredibly good value produce to the local community.”

The planned new supermarket forms part of the company’s £1.45bn investment in its expansion across Great Britain in 2019 and 2020.
