Revamp at prominent city centre building to create new retail space

Yorkshire construction company Harris CM has started work on a £1.5m refurbishment project that will see a well-known building on Fargate, Sheffield city centre, transformed into a new retail environment.

The work at 45-47 Fargate, on behalf of Wakefield-based Woodhead Investments and Development Services, includes the installation of a new façade with cladding and glazing, as well as the creation of a roof terrace, kitchen, seating space, storage areas, WC facilities, platform lift and new stairwell.

Once complete the building, which was previously occupied by Next, will offer more than 6,800 sq ft of space as well as the 667 sq ft terrace. It will appeal to a range of retail businesses and leisure operators.

Jason Adlam, CEO at Harris CM, said: “This project is an impressive addition to our portfolio of projects in the Sheffield area and once again we are delighted to provide continued opportunities for both our own workforce and our supply chain, with a significant proportion of both based in South Yorkshire.

“This development demonstrates continued confidence in Sheffield as a retail centre and leisure destination.

“It also complements the wider regeneration happening on Fargate, which is benefiting from a multi-million pound makeover, following Sheffield’s successful bid to the Government’s High Street Fund.”

The scheme’s Yorkshire-based project team also includes professional consultancy firm Austin Fletcher, Pearce Bottomley Architects, Eastwood & Partners Consulting Engineers and M&E specialist, Silcock Leedham.

David Woodhead, of Woodhead Investment & Development Services, added: “The redevelopment of 45–47 Fargate represents an exciting opportunity to create a modern, prominent corner unit, fully refurbished to suit a variety of uses including restaurant, banking, retail or office.

“There is potential for outside seating on both frontages in a very busy area of footfall between Marks & Spencer, John Lewis and the City Hall.

“We anticipate the property being ready for occupation towards the end of this year.”
