Castleford Tigers’ stadium upgrade wins approval

Wakefield Council’s Planning & Highways Committee resolved today – 15 February – to approve a major upgrade to Castleford Tigers’ Wheldon Road ground.

The stadium revamp will be funded by the creation of a new employment and logistics site next to junction 32 off the M62, which was also approved by councillors this morning.

Councillor Denise Jeffery leader of Wakefield Council, said: “Rugby League is a very important part of our heritage and of our future. So we are very pleased that this decision has been made today.

“It will help the club to meet Super League standards and therefore help support top-level rugby league being played in our district.

“It’s also going to create wonderful new facilities and opportunities for the local community.

“This will bring many benefits to our health and wellbeing, as well as supporting the development of talented young people from our district.”

Cllr Michael Graham, cabinet member for regeneration and economic growth, added: “Not only is this decision wonderful for the club and the local community but the new employment and logistics site will create almost 2,000 new jobs.

“This is a huge boost to the local and regional economy and ensures lasting benefits for the area.”

Developer Axiom Yorkshire will contribute £12.2m towards the stadium improvement if it is subsequently approved following referral to the Secretary of State.

A £2m contribution towards the stadium upgrade will come from Wakefield Council’s Rugby League Resilience Fund.
