LEP sets 60,000 jobs goal

THE Leeds City Region should be competing with the best in the world, according to LEP chairman Neil McLean.
Launching the Leeds City Region Local Enterprise Partnership’s plan this morning, Mr McLean warned there was no “quick fix” to the issues facing the area.
But he also stressed the huge untapped potential in an economy already larger than nine European countries.
“We should be competing with the best in the world,” he said.
The plan sets a goal of creating 60,000 jobs by 2016 and minimum annual growth of 2.6% in the period to 2030.
It also targets a “substantial and continued” cut in carbon emissions.
Mr McLean said: “What we are talking about is a medium long term strategy to deliver for the benefit of the whole region.
“This is about growing quality of life throughout the whole region. It’s not simply about economic growth for the sake of economic growth.
“This is not a five minute fix but this is an opportunity to really change the future economic direction of the city region and deliver for everyone in the city region. “
He was speaking at a LEP summit taking place at the Royal Armouries in Leeds today.
