Christmas catch up:

THE failure to secure a buyer for the concessions business operated by Barratts Priceless led administrators to make more than 1,600 staff redundant on Friday.

Administrators remain in “active discussions” with potential buyers for remaining pieces of the Bradford-based retail chain.

Barratts Priceless went into administration in early December blaming the downturn in consumer spending and the mild weather for its difficulties.

TURNOVER at Sheffield Forgemasters grew to £107.5m last year but operating profit fell by almost half to £2.3m.

The company said the figures reflected spending in areas including research and development and training as well as a squeeze on margins.

GLASGOW-based bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis considered a bid for rival Optare but withdrew when Ashok Leyland indicated it would not sell its shares at any price.

The interest from Alexander Dennis came after Optare, which has its main manufacturing site in Yorkshire, announced it had reached a deal with Ashok Leyland that would see it provide access to new finance in return for increasing its stake in the business from 26% to 75%.

OAK Holdings could pursue a legal claim against Rotherham Council over the way a contract was terminated.

Rotherham Council cancelled a short term lease and associated management contract with Oak Holdings for Rother Valley Country Park in October.

Oak Holdings said it taken legal advice over lodging a compensation claim.
