Firms can save money by diverting food waste from landfill

COMPOSTING or digesting food waste rather than sending it to landfill represents a huge opportunity for Yorkshire firms, according to CO2Sense Yorkshire.

The not-for-profit organisation is hosting an event to highlight the business opportunities offered by recycling food waste at The Loft on York Street, Leeds on July 14 from 5pm.

The event – ‘Diverting food waste from landfill for profit – providing waste collection services in the food and drink sector’ – will show how businesses in the region are calling for their food waste to be collected and recycled.

It is aimed at companies involved in collecting or recycling food waste from the commercial or industrial sectors in the area.

Key speakers at the event include Institute of Hospitality chief executive Phillipe Rossiter, who will show how hotels, restaurants and other hospitality businesses are keen to recycle their food waste as part of a string of environmental measures.

The evening will also feature a waste processor talking about how the region now has the capacity and infrastructure to process food waste once it has been collected.

Finally, Chris Mills of Waste & Resources Action programme (WRAP) will show how similar projects have worked in other parts of the country.

CO2Sense will present its latest research which provides insights into attitudes to waste management among food, drink and hospitality businesses.

Mike Greenhalf, project manager at CO2Sense, said: “Every year Yorkshire sends half a million tonnes of commercial and industrial food waste to landfill. Much of this comes from the food and drink and hospitality sectors.

“Landfill disposal is becoming increasingly expensive and also generates potent greenhouse gases including methane. This material should be viewed as a valuable resource rather than as a waste – from which we can create compost, digestate and renewable energy.”

The event is free to attend, but participants must register in advance by July 5.
