DavyMarkham engineers major mining win

YORKSHIRE engineering group DavyMarkham has won a £7.5m contract to supply specialist equipment to a new copper and zinc mine in Canada.

The historic Sheffield-based heavy engineering specialist is to build three specialist hoists measuring up to 16ft in diameter for Hudson Bay Mining Inc (HBMI).

The products will be supplied to the new Lalor Lake Mine on the Manitoba and Saskatchewan border by early next year.

As well as the Lalor Lake project, DavyMarkham is also working on a number of other mining schemes in Canada including Westwood and Éléonore mines in Quebec.

DavyMarkham, which makes large equipment used in the mining, quarrying, power generation, oil and gas, and nuclear sectors, was acquired by $1bn Indian group Hindustan Dorr Oliver (HDO) earlier this year.

HDO is India’s leading engineering procurement and construction company which is a subsidiary of IVRCL Infrastructures and Projects.

Kevin Parkin, managing director at DavyMarkham, said: “We have built DavyMarkham in to a recognised leader in the manufacture and delivery of mining hoists. The contract with one of our newest clients, HBMI will allow us to make greater strides in to the Canadian market.

“We have a strong reputation in both North America and Canada, which we will continue to grow on the back of this prestigious new contract.”

DavyMarkham is a member of NOF Energy, a body which provides business support services for the oil, gas, nuclear and offshore wind sectors.

Joanne Leng, director business development at NOF Energy, said: “DavyMarkham is recognised as one of the world leaders in the mining, quarrying and tunnelling sector. The £7.5m contract is testament to the confidence the industry has not only in copper and zinc mining, but also the expertise that DavyMarkham is able to supply.”
