In Brief: Andrew Jackson; MaruMarket; Triathlon brand; University of Sheffield

ANDREW Jackson’s shipping and transport team has been appointed on three multi-million pound cases on behalf of Indian-based clients.

Dominic Ward, head of the Hull-based firm’s shipping and transport department and a regular visitor to India, is acting on behalf of two companies which produce coke for the steel industry, based in India, as well as acting for a client involved in a dispute concerning the construction of a solar power station.

Mr Ward said: “Our firm has acted for companies that trade internationally for many years now, including acting for a number of Indian clients.

“In both recent cases the contracts which are in place are subject to English law with the arbitrations due to take place in London. It is quite common for international companies to agree contracts that specify that they are to be governed by English law, even when neither the subject matter of the contract, nor the parties to it, are connected with England.”

AN entrepreneur who has launched a home delivery grocery business is making plans to expand.

John Cant launched MaruMarket at the start of the year and as his business becomes more popular, he said he now hopes it can be developed.

Based in Beverley, MaruMarket works with the town’s businesses to provide an online, home delivery business.

He plans to open a warehouse and hopes the company can grow by being rolled out as a franchise.

Mr Cant’s East Yorkshire business has evolved through his desire to support local businesses.

MaruMarket supplies flour from Skidby windmill, products from the Side Oven bakery in Driffield and many other local suppliers.

Mr Cant said: “It is all about helping the businesses in Beverley. The local suppliers need to think about themselves and what they are doing to keep up with the times and the suppliers who use my business have said it has helped them to generate extra sales.”

A NEW a triathlon clothing brand has been launched thanks to a lifeline offered by a Yorkshire funding organisation.

Carl Burrows, founder of Larco Sports, a lifestyle sports brand supplying triathlon clothing, said he found high street banks put hurdles in his way when setting up his business.

He said: “I needed support as a start-up and was struggling to get it from the high street banks. I came across the Business Enterprise Fund which has been helpful from day one. My adviser knew about the sporting industry and I was given £20,000 from BEF which formed the stepping stones to get me up and running.”

SHEFFIELD’S steel heritage has been the inspiration for a new hospitality facility at the University of Sheffield.

Situated in the new multi-million pound redevelopment of the Students’ Union Building, a 100 cover restaurant, Inox Dine, is the centre piece of meeting and events space for up to 250 people.

Business development manager, Sarah-Jane Johnston, said: “It’s an exciting new addition to the University and a fantastic new destination to the restaurant, meeting and events scene in Sheffield.”
