In Brief: Ellis; NY Timber; Ward Hadaway

ELECTRICAL cable manufacturer Ellis has secured a major new contract in the Middle East.

The Malton-based company’s “Emperor” cleats will used in the construction of the new King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA), which is currently being built 19km north of the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah.

The order was secured through the North Yorkshire company’s Saudi distributor, Riyadh-based Mena Arabia.

Tony Conroy, export director for Ellis, said: “KAIA is one of the biggest infrastructure projects in the world today and securing such significant involvement in it is a resounding endorsement of our strategy of appointing local distributors in key export markets.”

ONE of Britain’s largest independent timber importers and merchants is reporting a sales fillip after investing in a new website.

Northallerton-headquartered NY Timber – which was known as North Yorkshire Timber until 2011 – launched a dedicated flooring and doors website last year. Since then, it has witnessed a 50% increase in sales of wooden flooring alone.
NY Timber’s managing director Nick Kershaw said that orders valued in excess of £10,000 have not been unusual.

He explained: “We did a lot of work on the website creating a bigger and better gallery of images to help customers with their decision making.

“That has paid off – online flooring sales have increased 50% over the last 12 months.

“Our biggest online order to date, well over £10,000, has been for bespoke oak flooring specialist Dennebos’ Tate, a distinctive fine sawn smoked and white oiled board, for a barn conversion in Bristol.”

LAWYERS from Ward Hadaway’s energy group have advised JFS & Associates, one of the UK’s leading biogas developers, on its industrial scale food waste scheme in Yorkshire.

In conjunction with city funders, Leeming Biogas has been developed by JFS to convert waste material from the food production industry into green energy.

The project at Leeming Bar in North Yorkshire is expected to be one of the largest facilities of its nature in the country and will provide sufficient green energy to power more than 2,500 homes.

Construction of the plant is due to be completed by September 2015.
