Derelict pub site in £2m transformation

CIVIL engineering contractor Britcon has secured a £2m contract to design and build homes on the site of a former derelict pub.

The Wakefield office of Britcon will complete the contract for YORBuild for Leeds City Council, following their successful extension of Leeds’s Tropical World leisure attraction.

18 flats will be built on the site at Swarcliffe Road, east Leeds, as part of Leeds City Council’s Housing Growth Programme which will deliver nearly 1,000 council homes.

Ian Chapman, regional contracts manager at Britcon, said, “The objective of this project is to produce affordable, low maintenance, energy efficient and sustainable homes.

“We proposed a timber frame construction to meet the high energy, thermal, acoustic and air tight requirements to deliver well-engineered and comfortable accommodation.

“Public engagement is critical given the high density residential location and we will aim to meet key Employment and Skills Social Responsibility targets that we exceeded during the Tropical World Project.”

Work will begin on site next month, to be completed by summer 2016.

Scunthorpe-based Britcon opened its Wakefield office a year ago and has secured contracts including the £4.2m Advanced Manufacturing Park in Sheffield and extension works for Queen Ethelberga’s College, University of Bradford and University of York.
