Bradford onto a winning streak as they win the ‘Curry Capital of Britain’ title

BRADFORD has cracked the code to win the Curry Capital of Britain for the fifth time in a row.

This will be the city’s sixth title so far as part of National Curry Week, and it was followed by Glasgow (Curry capital of Scotland) and the top southern challenger Brighton in third spot.

On a points system, judges score teams of four restaurants on health and hygiene, public votes, a council submission and charitable fundraising events.

Leicester managed to pip self-styled curry capital Birmingham to fourth place, with Birmingham fifth and London South and London Central joint sixth.

Peter Grove, founder of National Curry Week and co-editor of The Real Curry Restaurant Guide with his wife Colleen, said: “Winning Curry Capital of Britain is a long and arduous process, and all the restaurant teams have to be commended on their efforts.

“Unfortunately, some councils take the event more seriously than others, which means fewer points in the final analysis.”

‘The underlying concept of the event is Community Cohesion through Curry – not necessarily which city has the best restaurants.”

Curry is a serious business in Bradford, with renowned restaurants Mumtaz and Aagrah consistently growing. Prashad became the star of Gordon Ramsay’s TV show and other popular restaurants include Akbars, Kiplings, Thaal, Omar Khans, Karachi and Shimla Spice.

Next year Curry Capital of Britain will have preliminary events to determine the Curry Capitals of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

When told about the plans for the 14th Curry Capital of Britain®, Patricia Tillotson, on behalf of Bradford said, ‘bring it on!’

The 18th National Curry Week took place from 12-18 October 2015, supported by Sainsbury’s, Amira Rice, Bhai Cider and Kingfisher Premium Lager Beer.
