New lease of life for former Leeds tannery brownfield site

A LEEDS brownfield site could be looking at a major transformation, if plans are approved for a 269-apartment residential development.

Leeds firm Brewster Bye Architects designed the development which would create five buildings on a disused 134,548 sq ft site, for developers Stage One Development and Partners.

A planning application has been submitted for the Buslingthorpe Lane, close to Scott Hall Road.

The site is currently home to a semi-derelict mill building and former tannery, which has been empty for more than 20 years.

Chris Austin, managing director at Brewster Bye Architects, said: “The Sheepscar district of Leeds was once home to a thriving leather industry but the former tannery on this site has largely fallen into disrepair over the last century.

“Today only a few remnants of the original mill remain, including a distinctive boundary wall and chimney, which have both been incorporated into our designs and would become focal points within the landscape of the development.”
