2016: Hair trends you need to know about

If you’re feeling ready for a change in hairstyle for the new year then you’re going to want to check out the hairstyles and colour trends set to be huge on the red carpet and everywhere on social media alike in 2016.

Luckily we’ve got you covered with a sneaky little preview of the trends you can expect to see the celeb gang working, from embellished hair, (yes that’s jeweled accessories for hair) and the comeback of the simple hairband.

Key to creating your catwalk look in 2016 is all about the right hair style and colour. So where better to get the inside story on hair trends leading the way on catwalks, other than Westrow, the North’s award-winning hairdressing group and London Fashion Week partner. Steve Rowbottom, creative director of Westrow and L’Oréal Ambassador, together with his artistic team give their expert predictions.

WET LOOK
The undisputable stand-out trend for SS16 is wet-look hair. Inspired by fashion’s love affair with sports-luxe, at DSquared2 the look was ‘surfer girl’ slick, while at Julien MacDonald’s models sported ‘sweat-look’ locks, reminiscent of post-workout hair.

BRAID WINNER
It’s every little girl’s favourite style, and now the braid has returned, looking more grown-up and stylish than ever. At Celine hair was swept back into a medium-low braid: an easy-to-achieve chic alternative to a ponytail. At Louis Vuitton it was all about miniature, barely visible plaits, Gucci’s models sported super long braids, which were worn to the side and at Giles, hair was divided in to two reverse French plaits. To recreate the braided look, in a way that’s on-trend for the new season, take inspiration from Kristian Aadnevik’s S/S16 show.

DISHEVELLED

At Bottega Venetta, the aim backstage was to create ‘real girl hair’ and at Chloe, models wore their hair tousled, textured and full of natural kinks. To recreate the disheveled look, without stepping into ‘messy’ territory, take inspiration from Topshop Unique’s S/S16 show.

Jenny Pelter, technical director for the Westrow artistic team and a franchisee, based at Westrow Street Lanes, came up with four key Spring/Summer 2016 colour trends.Jenny Pelter, technical director at Westrow

EFFORTLESS
Effortlessly coloured hair, in a palette of earthy natural tones, was showcased at both Versace and Valentino’s S/S16 shows. Soft warm blonde tones were fused onto a background of a natural warm light brunette and baby lights were added in sections of freehand balayage.

ICE PASTELS
Cool toned pastels were seen on the catwalk at Louis Vuitton. It’s a trend that has been around for a while, but changes slightly every season and this time we’re back to icy shades of mauve, purple and pink.

GLITTER
Over the last couple of seasons we’ve seen hair coloured with chalk, colourful thread sewn in to hair and glitter pens used on the parting. Now the fun factor comes by way of brightly coloured glitter and sparkly sequins. Models at Ashish shone brightly, with random sections of hair painted with candy-tone glitter. Festival-goers will no doubt enjoy trying this fun new trend. My top tip would be to fix sparkles in place with gel and hairspray.

CONTOURING
Contouring will be a big hit in S/S16; it’s all about the enhancement of face shapes, bringing out your best features and playing down the areas you want to hide. Contouring will be a key trend because the technique is adapted to each different face shape, so it really does work on everyone.
