Sports centre in the works for Leeds

A SPORTS centre is opening up with a little help from Leeds College of Building.
It is a 8,000 sq ft centre on Lockwood Court close to the John Charles Centre for Sport.
The Level Up Academy will provide a space for people to practice parkour, freerunning, breakdancing, cheerleading and martial arts.
The facility has received grants from The Big Lottery Fund and The Key Fund.
Full-time joinery students from Leeds College of Building are now constructing timber frames that will form a solid staging area and they are also creating obstacles for the parkour and freerunning course.
Mark Sims, external project co-ordinator at Leeds College of Building, said: “We’re always keen to support local organisations and it’s great experience for our students to work on live projects, which greatly enhances their learning, so the Level Up Academy is a fantastic scheme for us to be involved with. It’s also likely that the parkour course will change and evolve regularly so hopefully our students can help to shape it for the foreseeable future.”
Martin Wan one of the founders of Level Up Academy says: “These highly creative and expressive activities are becoming increasingly popular but there are very few places where people can participate and learn about them.
“Level Up Academy will change this by offering a purpose built facility designed for all types of urban activities and sports that ultimately serve to improve fitness, raise aspirations and provide a diversion from anti-social behaviour.
“We plan to nurture and create a thriving community for practitioners of all types of movements and activities and we’re confident that Level Up Academy will become a valuable asset for Leeds and the surrounding area.”
