New diploma embraced by print firm

A NEW education initiative aimed at combining practical and theoretical learning in schools is being back by Sheffield printer Northend.
The firm has already shown pupils from Myers Grove City Learning Centre and Stocksbridge School around its Heeley premises including a a tour of the factory and a step-by-step guide to the print industry from order to design and completion.
The visit also featured a demonstration of Northend’s new £1m Heidelberg XL 75 press, which is only the fourth of its kind in the world and the first in the UK.
Northend, which employs more than 50 staff, is also taking two students on half-day work experience for six weeks, giving them further hands-on-experience for their Diplomas.
Northend HR consultant Dorothy Betts said: “Young people are the future and often have more to offer than they are given credit for.
“I hope that by opening our doors and showing these students how much IT is an integral part of the day-to-day work we have really brought things to life for them.”
Launched earlier this year the 14-19 Diplomas are courses in industry sector subjects that combine school and work-based learning. The qualification is worth the equivalent of seven GCSEs.
