It’s that time of year again: Top 3 things to consider when planning your Christmas party

THE secret to staging a successful Christmas party is all in the planning, says Daniel Gill, founder of Dine.
Leeds-based Dine is a bespoke hospitality and event management company that caters for more than 300 events and parties a year – they have even entertained the Queen!
It’s never too early to start planning your Christmas party, says Daniel. Summer may just be over but some serious festive organising now will ensure your Christmas party runs smoothly. September is the busiest time for booking Christmas parties and Thursday, Friday and Saturday are the most popular days to host a party.
Location, location, location
The location for your event is arguably one of the most important decisions when planning an event. The venue will set the backdrop for your party. It is important to first identify what you require from a venue – capacity, location, ambience, accessibility, local accommodation and budget.
Don’t forget, Christmas is not just a busy time for your guests. Unique venues will sell out fast – we were taking bookings at The Mansion in December 2015 for Christmas this year. The longer you leave it the less choice there will be.
Think outside the box. Many people are now looking for more than a turkey dinner in a standard function room. To make a party stand out, you need an interesting and exciting venue along with an appropriate theme that fits the tone of your event.
And don’t forget to check what is included in the price to allow you to budget accurately.
Making the party go with a swing
If budget allows, go for a theme that incorporates décor, lighting, entertainment and fun-filled activities. Alternative ideas that we offer at Dine include a Christmas barbecue, geocaching for Secret Santa presents in the park or old-fashioned parlour games for a more traditional feel.
Be adventurous
Don’t just stick with the tried and tested – give your guests a unique experience to make your party unforgettable. We’ve been asked to organise everything from a ‘night in Venice’ to opera singers, fairgrounds and a fireworks display in the park. All of these themes can be tailored around exceptional food and service to ensure the event has the right impact.
Invest time in your food to fully reflect your company and its values. Bespoke menus can really give your party the wow factor.
Work with your venue to establish expectations for your Christmas menu. Are you aiming for a traditional or more innovative menu, a buffet or three-course meal? Will there be a set menu or can guests choose their dishes beforehand? Remember to cater for any special dietary requirements. If you have a theme to your party, your venue caterer will help you to incorporate it in your menu.
Don’t be afraid to ask for a menu tasting before you make your final choice.
The Christmas party is a key part of your staff engagement strategy and the perfect opportunity to celebrate success, boost staff morale and retain key workers so it is important to get it right.
