Plans submitted for major business park at former Kellingley Colliery

PLANS have been submitted for a new business park at the former Kellingley Colliery in addition to a major energy from waste plant.

95,000 sq ft of employment space would be submitted if plans are approved. It is one of the most recent approvals for the site after Peel Environmental’s Southmoor Energy Centre as given the green light in 2014.

It said it will produce enough electricity to power around 63,000 homes and divert waste from landfill.

Design consultancy Barton Willmore submitted the business park plans on behalf of Harworth Group, which promised hundreds of jobs for the site.

Kellingley Colliery closed in December 2015 and Harworth took ownership of the site in March 2016.

Public consultation on the plans took place in September, with sessions held at Knottingley Town Hall and Eggborough Village Hall for residents, local businesses and councillors to see the plans.

The planning committee is due to make a decision in the first quarter of 2017.

Claire Kent, planning director in Barton Willmore’s Leeds office said: “Given its existing infrastructure and highly sustainable location, this is an exciting and significant opportunity to redevelop the site that will replace employment lost when the mine closed late last year and aligns with Selby’s economic growth ambitions.”

Iain Thomson, Harworth group partnerships and communications manager, said: “We are highly experienced in regenerating former industrial sites and over the last year we have worked closely with Selby District Council and other key stakeholders to move plans forward. Our overriding priority is to bring good-quality jobs back to the area.”
