Former Nestle factory gets residential revamp

The former Nestle factory in York is set to undergo a residential transformation after standing vacant for just under a decade.

The site on Haxby Road will see 263 residential apartments built on site.

The landmark building has been empty since 2008 and has fallen into disrepair. The confectionary business said it was looking for a suitable developer during this time.

Property development company Newby is taking on the development of the site, named The Cocoa Works.

It will contain a mix of one, two and three bedroom apartments over six existing floors and includes a roof-top extension.

A 4,000 sq ft convenience store, storage for 288 bicycles and 173 external parking spaces as well as landscaped areas are also proposed.

Nick Moody, founding partner at Newby said, “We love the building and all that it stands for and, after detailed consultation with the local public and other key stakeholder groups that gave 98% positive feedback, we feel that our proposals make the most of its potential.

“The design seeks to preserve the structure, and external features such as the memorial library, clocks, railings and covered walkway, whilst providing a revised internal configuration to provide new homes that are much needed in the area.”

Subject to planning consent, Newby hopes to be able to start works on site by November 2017 with a phased delivery programme over 30 months. The first phase of apartments will be released for sale in Summer 2018.

Axis Architecture has designed the scheme and York based O’Neill Associates is appointed planning consultant.
