Trio of food businesses relish the launch of ‘ultimate pie’

Three Yorkshire food companies have joined forces to create the first-ever pie featuring the iconic Henderson’s Relish from Sheffield.

Henderson’s, Jones Pies of Huddersfield and caterers The Proper Pasty Group of Sheffield have teamed up to create the Proper Steak & Henderson’s Pie.

The pie is baked by Jones Pies using classic hot-water pastry and slow-cooked British beef, with Henderson’s Relish adding a delicious and distinctive savoury tang.

It is available now in delicatessens and independent retailers across the north of England, as well in the Co-Op and Parfetts Cash and Carry.

It is likely to go into supermarkets next month, Henderson’s says.

Matt Davies, general manager of Henderson’s, said: “We are very proud of this pie, which tastes amazing. It’s a new step on the exciting Henderson’s journey and we are confident of its success.

“Our many devotees have been splashing our sauce on to ready-made pies and into stews, but this collaboration marks the first time that our spicy Sheffield sauce has joined forces with a pie-maker to create an official steak and Henderson’s pie. We are delighted by the result.

“These are exciting times for Henderson’s as we invest in new machinery to boost our expansion drive across Yorkshire and beyond. The new pie will raise the profile of our Relish across the north, which complements our expansion drive perfectly.”

It was Henry Henderson who concocted his first batch of relish in 1885. Originally made at Broad Lane in Sheffield, Henderson’s Relish is still being made and has been in uninterrupted production within a short distance of the site from which the first bottle was filled.
