Bradford gets fired up about ‘Curry Capital’ bid

BRADFORD – for many the home of the curry in this country – could cement that claim after being named in the running to be the national ‘Curry Capital’.
The competition is running as part of the 13th National Curry Week which takes place at the end of November.
Yorkshire has recently been in the headlines after Leeds hosted the World Curry Festival.
Curry ‘cafe’ Lahore Cafe Bar has been named as part of the official team to represent Bradford alongside Aagrah and Shimla Spice in Shipley as well as Azeems in Keighley.
The venues were selected following a public vote and will team up with Bradford Council to progress the title bid.
Bradford last held the accolade in 2004 and the contest is returning this year following a three-year absence.
Shakoor Ahmed, managing director of Lahore Cafe Bar in Bradford city centre, said the title would bring great benefits.
Mr Ahmed said: “Bradford has had its fair share of knocks in recent years and it’s really exciting to learn that we can be involved in contributing to a much more positive modern-day image for the city.
The diversity of Bradford’s resident population has given rise to a highly authentic approach to international cuisine over the years – it’s something we should celebrate and the Curry Capital bid allows us to showcase the Asian food sector with genuine pride.”
The merits of each restaurant will be judged by a team of 13 who will examine the standard of food, service, hygiene, cleanliness and how local communities are engaged in business activities.
Public voting continues until November 1st and a week later, Bradford Council will submit a dossier to the competition organisers to explain why the city deserves to be Britain’s Curry Capital. The final announcement as to which city is victorious will be made on December 8.
