Plans revealed to bring derelict Nottingham pub back to life

How the new scheme could look

A Nottingham pub that first opened in Victorian times but has been derelict for seven years could be re-opened with its upper floors being turned into student flats.

Plans have been submitted by Sam Burt to refurbish the former Grove pub and build an extension to its rear to provide 38 student bedrooms.

Leonard Design is the architect on the scheme which would transform the run-down former pub on Castle Boulevard in the Lenton district of Nottingham.

A planning statement submitted by Leonard Design states: “The Grove Pub has now been boarded up for a number of years and due to the lack of inhabitation and their daily activities has
seen the beginnings of decay to external façades, specifically some of the period Victorian detailing.

“It is the intention of this application that as much of the original character of the Grove pub is retained.

“As designer we have seen first-hand the benefits of student accommodation. It makes the market thrive not only because of the tuition fees but student spending being a major contributor to the city with international student brining a large amount to the UK economy.”

“The close proximity of the successful western corridor cycle super highway means links to the University of Nottingham couldn’t be easier.

When it comes to benefiting from the students spending power it’s small businesses such as cafes, taxi firms, sandwich shops, takeaways , pubs, clubs and restaurants. This we believe can only benefit the reopening of The Grove Pub as a meeting place.”

Nottingham City Council’s planning committee will decide on the scheme over the coming months.
