Plans in for huge Notts housing estate

Outline plans for a huge 235-home housing estate and school in Nottinghamshire have been submitted to Rushcliffe Borough Council.

Marrons of Nottingham has submitted the plan, in Rempstone Road, East Leake, which it says meets part of Rushcliffe Borough Council’s requirement to build a minimum of 400 homes in East Leake.

Concerns have been raised by locals about how the local school, Brookside, would cope with the new population influx.

Marrons, acting of behalf of landowners N&B Farming, said in a statement: “The proposed development provides a unique opportunity to either construct a new school or to relocate and significantly expand Brookside Primary School.

“We are aware that the capacity of local primary school is a matter of concern to local people. In recent years, housing developers have been required to contribute in excess of
£1.5m towards East Leake primary schools. To date this money remains unspent, largely because Brookside School is unable to expand to accommodate growing pupil numbers.

“These proposals give the local education authority the opportunity to use this significant sum of money towards a new, purpose-built school.

“We have met with education authority officers who agree that the Rempstone Road site is the only realistic location for a much-needed new school in East Leake and that the proposed housing development could be the catalyst for its delivery.

“Our proposals include a site area sufficient to accommodate a two form entry primary school (two classes per year group).”

The school site would sit alongside the new school playing field provided by Persimmon Homes as part of their development on land east of Kirk Ley.

Marrons said that the 12.5 ha development would “include a mixture of house types”, but the specific mix “hadn’t been decided yet”.
