Start date confirmed for new dual carriageway works in Telford

Telford

WORK is scheduled to start on an important new road scheme in Telford. Improvements to Rampart Way will improve its connectivity and provide a better link between the A442 Queensway and the M54.

Rampart Way – which runs between the Forge Roundabout at Junction 5 of the M54 and the A442 Hollinswood Interchange – is currently a single carriageway road but will be made a dual carriageway as part of the upgrade.

It is the first of two sections of road that will be made into dual carriageways with the aim of providing an improved ring road to the town centre.

The other road forms part of Hall Park Way which runs between the Forge Roundabout at Junction 5 of the M54 and the Hall Park Roundabout.

High volumes of traffic currently use Rampart Way to connect between the A442 and the M54 and the predicted levels of growth in the town centre will mean surrounding roads will continue to become busier.

The funding for the dualling of both Rampart Way and Hall Park Way has been largely secured from the Department for Transport, with the remainder financed by Section 106 contributions from new housing and commercial developments in Telford town centre

The work, which starts on Monday (October 17), will be carried out by Alun Griffiths (Contractors) and will initially involve setting up the site compound on land next to Junction 5 of the M54.

The second week will see work start on Rampart Way itself, which will involve the installation of lane restrictions.

Cllr Angela McClements, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Transport, said: “This (scheme) reflects the ongoing investment and development that has been taking place over the past few years.

“Making the two sections of road dual carriageways will improve journey times and achieve a long-held ambition to improve the link between Telford’s main north-south trunk road and the county’s motorway.

“Inevitably, some disruption is unavoidable and we will be working with local businesses and stakeholders to keep this to a minimum.”

With the onset of work corresponding to the start of the busy festive shopping period, the council said it would work with retailers to ensure disruption was kept to a minimum.

Work on Rampart Way is expected to be completed in April 2017, with work on Hall Park Way due to start immediately after Rampart Way is completed. Hall Park Way is expected to be finished by September 2017.
