Administrators called in at £12m contractor

Administrators have been called into the mining subsidiary of a £40m turnover engineering group, putting around 90 jobs at risk.

Doncaster-based S.E.S Contracting, the subsidiary of S.E.S Holdings, employed 92 people according to last year’s accounts, but it is unclear how many jobs are at risk as a result of the administration.

The company, which specialises in contracts in the mining, tunneling, shaft works and civil engineering sectors, is based at Harworth Park in Doncaster.

It called in administrators Kate Breese and Philippa Smith of Leeds insolvency firm Walsh Taylor at the end of March, as a result of the declining mining sector and the loss of clients from its already narrow base following the closure of several deep pit mines.

The company reported pre-tax losses of £643,260 on revenues of £12.1m in its last filed accounts to March 2016, down from a profit of more than £175,000 the year before.

At the time SES said it was working hard to expand its narrow customer base. However, parent company SES Holdings warned that its customer base had only shrunk, with the closure of more deep mines during the year.

SES Holdings is a £40.5m-turnover group and made pre-tax losses of just over £171,000 last year. It employs a total of 346 people.

TheBusinessDesk contacted administrators for comment on several occasions but received no response.
