Work completed on 75,000 sq ft blood centre

Work has now been completed on a new NHS blood facility at a business park in Dodworth, South Yorkshire.

NHS Blood and Transplant signed a deal with property company CDP Marshall to build a new 75,000 sq ft bespoke blood facility at Capitol Park Barnsley.

NHS Blood and Transplant is responsible for blood, organ, tissue and stem cell donation. The division carries out research and provides specialist services to hospitals in the region.

The new centre will be home to many teams and functions including specialist laboratories, specialist nurses in organ donation and support services.

The facility is now finished and, following a comprehensive fit-out, staff will move in next year.

Marshalls worked with the Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and Enterprising Barnsley to deliver the project.

A spokesman for CDP Marshall said: “I believe the decision to site this bespoke NHS blood centre here is an endorsement of the location of Capitol Park, Barnsley, which is already established as one of the finest mixed-use business parks in South Yorkshire.

“The site is recognised as a business park location with occupiers having a very significant impact on the local economy, contributing to a very prosperous future for Barnsley.”

Cllr Roy Miller, Barnsley MBC Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, added: “We’re delighted to welcome the new NHS Blood and Transplant centre to Capitol Park in Barnsley. The purpose-built state of the art facility will provide world class services and training amenities here in the heart of Yorkshire.”

Chris Sims, accountable executive for NHS Blood and Transplant, also said: “It has been fantastic to see the building taking shape and we are very excited about the next phase of development of our state-of-the-art centre. Now the centre has been handed over, we can begin the extensive fit-out of the interior. We expect the facility to be open by summer 2020.

“Barnsley will be a great place from which to deliver our life saving and life enhancing work and will allow us to develop the services we provide to hospitals in the region.”

Rebecca Schofield, partner and head of property consultancy Knight Frank’s industrial property team in Yorkshire, is advising Marshalls on the project.

Once fully developed, more than 1000 jobs will be created at Capitol Park.
