Broadband boost for rural businesses

PRIVATE businesses across North Yorkshire now have more options to benefit from the region’s most extensive high-speed broadband network.

The announcement, from communications network provider NYnet, formed by North Yorkshire County Council with funding from Yorkshire Forward and the European Union, will see the region’s main 45 connection hubs made available to private businesses.

NYnet, which has connected 800 public sector locations over the last five years, is now able to offer three tiers of next generation broadband services in its Nynet Connect range, which includes fully bespoke broadband connections to unique sDSL products which it says are ideal for SMEs.

It is thought to be a particular boost to businesses such as those in the creative industry in rural and coastal locations which have previously been disadvantaged in terms of broadband connectivity.

The creative industry in North Yorkshire accounts for 11,600 employees across 1,500 businesses which have previously been forced to rely on traditional dial up connections to access the internet.

NYnet’s chief executive David Cullen said: “This is great news for the region and means companies from Scarborough to Skipton can now utilise high-speed broadband to support the latest digital services and IT technologies such as VoIP, video conferencing and fast downloads/uploads.

“This new range of products caters for the diverse mix of companies that are based throughout North Yorkshire – from sole traders to multi nationals, so they can all realise benefits to suit their specific business needs.

“It also means businesses in North Yorkshire can truly join the 21st century digital economy on an equal footing with competitors in more established towns and cities such as Manchester and Leeds. It’s clear to see there is a wealth of talent and creativity throughout the region already and this great step forward will also make North Yorkshire a more attractive place to move your business to.”
