Major seafood supplier goes into administration

A FISH supplier has been placed in administration after heavy investment in its assets and loss of customers and raw materials took its toll on the firm.

As of 2014 Mariner Foods, based in Grimsby, had around 100 employees. The majority of these employees were offered employment at other local businesses, but according to administrators “a small number of redundancies could not be avoided.”

Sarah Burge of Kingsbridge Corporate Solutions has been appointed as administrator of the firm.

Last accounts for the firm, for the year ending June 30, showed that the shareholders’ funds were in the negative, with net liabilities of £295,688.

Parent firm Sealincs agreed to inject a further £300,000 to allow the firm to continue trading then.

The firm was headed up by Ken Bottomley, who founded the business that became Sealord at Caistor, and Orn Jonsson, a director of Atlantic Fresh which supplies 20,000 tonnes of Icelandic fish to the Grimsby Fish Market every year.

The firm, which operated from the Great Grimsby Business Park ceased trading after three years.

Founded in 2012 the firm invested heavily in its factory, equipment and facilities and at the time it was reported the firm would create 100 jobs. Last year the firm won a supplier contract with Aldi.

A statement from the administrators said: “In the last few months a loss of customers and a lack of supplies of key strategic raw materials led to a reduced turnover leaving the business unsustainable.”
