Businesses set to champion Nottingham as city hosts UK Corporate Games

The UK Corporate Games in Nottingham could be a major game-changer for the city according to law firm Browne Jacobson.
Organisers estimate over 5,000 people from across the UK will descend on the city this weekend to take part in the event which is the largest multi-sport event aimed at businesses and organisations in the world.
Seventy members of the law firm will be participating in the Games which take place from 6-9 July. They will be joined by teams from over 100 companies, including some of the UK’s leading businesses such as Accenture, Asda, Ernst & Young, IBM, Virgin Trains and Vodafone.
The event also has the support of some of the region’s most high profile public and private sector organisations and employers including Nottingham City Council, Visit Nottinghamshire, East Midlands Chamber, Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and Speedo, amongst others.
According to Sarah Walker-Smith, chief operating officer at Browne Jacobson, the UK Corporate Games has the potential to be a real game-changer for the city.
She said: “Bringing the Games to Nottingham has been a major coup for the city. As well as being a great sporting and networking event, it is also a fantastic opportunity for us in the business community to be ambassadors for Nottingham and show what a great city we have in which to live and work. As well as the immediate impact over the weekend, we are hoping that the benefits will be felt for years to come.”
Participants will compete in 23 sports ranging from badminton, basketball and cricket through to tenpin bowling, touch rugby and volleyball at a number of venues including the city’s flagship £40m David Ross Sports Village.
Medals will be awarded to individuals and teams placed first, second and third in each event with the winners having an opportunity to compete at the World Corporate Games in Texas later in the year.
Joe Davis, a trainee in Browne Jacobson’s retail property team, is competing in the badminton competition.
He said: “This is a unique event and the opportunity to compete in our home city was too good to miss. We are taking the competition extremely seriously with many of us putting in extra training sessions and playing warm up matches in the run up to the event in the hope of picking up a medal or two.”
Vicky Gaskell is an associate in the firm’s corporate finance team and a member of the firm’s touch rugby team.
She added: “We have a number of colleagues joining us from some of our other offices so it is going to be a real team effort. It promises to be a fantastic event and a great party atmosphere in the city over the next few days.”
